Rainer Blasczyk is Full Professor of Transfusion Medicine and Head of the Institute of Tranfusion Medicine and Transplant Engineering at Hannover Medical School since 1998 as well as board member of the transplantation center. Professor Blasczyk has initiated the research project Invisible Organs, a pioneering approach of transplant engineering to combat organ rejection. Since 2018, Professor Blasczyk has been head of the Invisible Organs innovation network funded jointly by the European Regional Development Fund and the state of Lower Saxony. Professor Blasczyk was president of the German Society for Immunogenetics (DGI) in 2005/2006 and 2014/2015, president of the German Society of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology (DGTI) in 2015/2016, served as a board member of the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI) from 2008 - 2010 and as transplantation specialist on its advisory board since 2009. Dr. Blasczyk is editor of the journal Transfusion Medicine and member of the editorial board of the journal HLA. Since 2016, he has been an appointed member of the Advisory Board on Blood Products of the Federal Ministry of Health. In addition, Professor Blasczyk is chairman of the Immunotherapy Foundation and successful founder of two companies in the field of biotechnology.

His expertise is in the fields of transplantation medicine and immunotherapy. His research aims to prevent transplant rejection by genetic engineering and immunotherapeutic interventions. Professor Blasczyk is considered a pioneer in transplant engineering and highly specialized in the field of histocompatibility systems. He is particularly interested in their genetic structure and molecular function in order to identify therapeutic targets for engineering and therapeutic options to substantially improve clinical outcome of transplantation.
